Colorado GOP Push For Payment During Fracking Bans

DENVER (AP) — Colorado House Republicans will propose legislation requiring counties that ban fracking to pay mineral owners for losing their ability to develop their property.

The House GOP said Thursday that Rep. Perry Buck of Windsor will be introducing the bill in the session that begins next month.

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is expected to be a heated topic of debate for lawmakers. During the session, they will also be getting recommendations from a task force studying how to resolve land disputes over energy development.

The task force was assembled by Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper as a compromise to get groups to drop competing ballot measures that would support or limit fracking.

Fracking opponents have been making a push to give local governments more control over drilling.
