Colorado man suspected of striking pedestrian on purpose and fleeing arrested

Search underway for SUV and driver suspected of intentionally striking pedestrian in Thornton

Police have arrested a Colorado man accused of intentionally striking and killing a pedestrian with his SUV.

The pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was killed when investigators say 34-year-old Mathew Lopez intentionally hit him and then fled the scene.

It happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. on the 84th Avenue bridge that runs above Interstate 25 in Thornton. Lopez's SUV was found later on Tuesday and he was arrested Wednesday.

The identity of the victim was being withheld while authorities were attempting to contact the man's family.

Lopez is now facing charges of homicide and is being held at the Adams County Detention Facility on a $1 million bond.

Court records show Lopez has several convictions for driving on a suspended license and driving with expired license plates.
