Colorado police pursuit ends with crash in Castle Rock, 1 suspect shot, another in custody
A long police chase took place overnight in the Denver metro area and ended in a deputy-involved shooting in Castle Rock. No law enforcement officers were hurt.
The situation began when police in Thornton saw what was believed to be a stolen pickup truck. Officers attempted to stop the truck but a suspect inside fired shots at officers while traveling toward Interstate 25. The Douglas County Sheriff's Officer said that officers didn't fire back at the suspects at that time.
The pursuit continued onto I-25 southbound into Douglas County with deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office picking up the pursuit at Countyline Road.
At some point, the suspect vehicle sideswiped two civilian vehicles and continued southbound on I-25. The suspects exited at Wolfensberger in the town of Castle Rock and headed westbound to that area of Coachline and East Plum Creek Parkway.
"There were two incidents of the suspect swerving towards deputies. Once was off of I-25 when they attempted to deploy stop sticks there and the second was off Plum Creek Parkway where the suspect again ran towards our deputies, attempting to run them over," said Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly.
Deputies deployed stop sticks on the suspect vehicle which continued southbound on Plum Creek Parkway before it veered toward the 7-Eleven in Castle Rock off Plum Creek Parkway. It is unclear whether the suspect driver pulled over on purpose or lost control of the vehicle.
The pickup truck with spray-painted words on the back gate crashed into the 7-Eleven where a clerk was working and one customer was inside.
Deputies approached the suspect vehicle when the suspect showed a gun to the deputies, at which point the deputies fired and shot the suspect several times. The second suspect, a female inside the vehicle later identified as Hannah Woolard, 36, was not injured. The clerk and customer were not injured.
The suspect was rushed to the hospital where he is expected to survive. That suspect has been identified as Kyle Williamson, 32.
So far it's not clear what initially led the suspects to fire on the officers in Thornton.
The sheriff's office said there were traffic delays Wednesday morning in the area around Plum Creek Parkway and Perry Street in Castle Rock due to the investigation.
"They did a fantastic job from all indications on the preliminary investigation. The criminal investigation is being conducted by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the shooting investigation is being done by the 18th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team and that's the Douglas, Elbert, Lincoln Division of that shoot team and they are conducting a thorough investigation," said Weekly.
