Castle Rock Standoff Ends After 7+ Hours

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4)- A standoff in Castle Rock ended late Tuesday night. The barricaded suspect kept police at bay for more than seven hours and police later said he was found dead.

Officers say they had been in contact with the person multiple time days before the incident. They responded to the home on Red Hawk Drive for a welfare check on Sept. 6. A friend told police the person inside was suicidal.

Officers say the person was agitated by their presence, so they left.

Later that night, an officer spoke with the person on the phone for 80 minutes, urging him to get help, but the man declined.

The next morning, a suicide hotline alerted police the man threatened to harm himself. A family member also called police who said they were worried about the man who was posting on social media.

An officer spoke with the man again on the phone when he threatened to shoot officers and himself if police showed up. The officer says they then heard a gunshot on the phone followed by silence.

Police then responded to the same home at around 3 p.m. on Sept. 7. They learned the man was still alive and uninjured and claimed to have multiple firearms.

Officers then evacuated neighbors.

The standoff lasted more than seven hours until late into the night.

"After all efforts to get the subject to surrender were exhausted, a robot was deployed inside the residence," Castle Rock police officials stated. They add no shots were fired by officers, and instead they deployed chemical irritants, sound and light diversions and breached doors and windows.

The robot then found the subject dead inside.
