Carports That Can't Handle The Heavy Snow Collapse On Cars

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Some people living at an apartment complex in Aurora couldn't go anywhere Sunday morning because the heavy spring snow caused several carports to collapse.

CBS4's Lauren DiSpirto spoke to one of the vehicle owners who said she actually got a call from the property manager suggesting she move her car, but it was already too late.

By the time Sarah Heath says property managers told her to move her vehicle out from underneath a carport her sedan had already been damaged.

"The whole back of the glass is shattered," Heath said.

Heath lives at the Canterra Apartments in Aurora where the weight of this weekend's snow caused carports across the property to buckle.

"Waking up first thing in the morning and the first thing you see the carport that you parked under is completely collapsed. Man it's crazy," Canterra resident Kelvin Hurst said.

Hurst counted seven failed structures.

"All together, seven, eight cars per carport, so yeah you're looking at big numbers," he said.

For Heath, it's not the first time it has happened, and she's worried she'll have to foot the repair bill.

"It sucks because that's now stuff that we have to pay for on top of everything else," Heath said.

Hurst fears more carports may come down.

"Nothing about the weather really surprises me but just, goodness. they're starting to crack all around us now," he said.

Residents say property managers aren't yet saying when they'll clean any of it up.
