Browns Canyon One Step Closer To Becoming National Monument

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- The plan to turn one of the most popular rafting sites in Colorado into a National Monument gets one step closer.

Sen. Mark Udall is proposing to make Browns Canyon into a 22,000 acre National Monument. This week the National Parks Subcommittee approved the proposal.

The Arkansas River flows through Browns Canyon, where a majority of the 250,000 people who raft in Colorado each year make their destination.

The status would protect the area from future development.

The measure now moves onto another senate committee.
