Boulder Nonprofit Promotes Bike Riding Through Annual Holiday Giveaway

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Hundreds of children got their hands on a new bike on Saturday as a part of the 9th annual Kids' Holiday Bike Give Away in Boulder.

The event is put on by the nonprofit biking organization called Community Cycles.

"Bicycling is really the answer to being able to grow sustainably as a city," Sue Prant with Community Cycles said.

The organization recycles 2,500 bikes all year in an effort to grow the biking population.

"Lots of people getting around by bicycle will make our community more livable, more sustainable," Prant said.

With just an optional donation this year, about 250 children got one of the refurbished bikes. Organizers say the annual event brings back some of the same kids as they outgrow their bikes.

"We are able to recycle these bikes so a kid doesn't go buy a new one and have this one end up in a landfill," Prant said.

All of the bikes were donated by community members. Organizers say for some kids it's the most anticipated present of the holiday season.

"Lots of times we see the same families come a couple years because kids grow," Prant said.
