Body In Waterton Canyon Identified As Missing Man, Motorcycle Not Found
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The body recovered from Waterton Canyon on Saturday has been identified as a local man missing for weeks.
The Douglas County Sheriff said the remains are those of Robert Jacobs, who disappeared on June 8.
Jacobs left his home in Castle Rock and said he was riding his motorcycle to Breckenridge. That motorcycle has yet to be found.
There have been on and off closures of the road from Waterton Canyon to Strortia Springs Reservoir.
The gate was open during the time when Jacobs went missing, but closed shortly after. It re-opened last weekend, which is when hikers along the trail spotted his body floating in the river.
"We searched all of the different routes that you could take. To include enlisting our helicopter to help search the area," said Sgt. Ron Hanavan of Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities had been searching for Jacobs since early June, and continue to look all along the South Platte River upstream from Waterton.
"We know where he was located, but we still don't know where the motorcycle is," said Hanavan.
They're hoping someone might find the Harley Davidson Road King with Colorado license plate 445-UVU.
"It's very possible that by finding that bike, we may get some more answers," Hanavan said.
Exactly what happened to Jacobs is still unknown.
"We don't know if there was some kind of medical condition that had occurred, we don't know if there was a traffic crash, we just don't know," said Hanavan.
There isn't believed to be any threat to the public.
"We do have a lot of investigation to do, obviously we owe it to the family as well as Mr. Jacobs to determine what it is that occurred," Hanavan said.
The question remains if the bike is in the stretch of river where Jacobs was found.
Denver Water said they're planning some maintenance and repairs for that stretch of the river when lower than normal levels arrive, but that likely won't happen until the fall.
