Blacks Wary Of Colorado University Dental School

DENVER (AP) — A faculty committee asked to look into the experience of minorities at the University of Colorado's dental school finds the school has such a bad reputation that potential black students are advised not to apply.

In their report issued this week, four CU staff members say they were particularly disconcerted to hear from black dentists and others in Denver of a perception that minority students are routinely discriminated against on the campus, and that that perception leads to potential applicants being dissuaded from considering the school.

The Denver Post reported Thursday that the review was prompted by complaints from people like Andre Gillespie, a black Denver dentist who graduated from the school in 2008. Gillespie tells the Post he hopes the review will lead to better treatment for other minorities.
