Black Hawk Helicopter Practices Landing At Metro Area Hospitals

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Black Hawk helicopters buzzed over parts of Colorado on Wednesday as pilots with the Army National Guard practiced landing at Denver metro area hospitals.

One landing practice was at the University of Colorado Hospital. The practice allows pilots to prepare to land at metro area hospitals if they rescue people during floods, wildfires, or a search and rescue mission.

"They would be able to bring multiple patients at once as opposed to our civilian helicopters that can only bring one patient at a time," Joy Schmitter with UCH said.

UCH is the closest hospital to Buckley Air Force Base with the capability to allow a Black Hawk helicopter to land.

Only a handful of area hospitals have helipads equipped for a Black Hawk helicopter landing.
