Bill In Vermont House Would Study Legalizing Pot
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont House is slated to take a final vote on passage of a measure calling for a study of potential tax revenues and other impacts from legalizing marijuana.
That provision was added to a bill Wednesday calling for adjustments to an existing state law allowing some sick Vermonters to use marijuana for relief of their symptoms.
The Ways and Means Committee called for adding the provision to study what the effects might be if Vermont were to follow Colorado and Washington state in legalizing, regulating and taxing the drug.
Some lawmakers criticized the measure, with Republican Rep. Kurt Wright of Burlington saying it would give the public a clear sign that Vermont was on the road to legalization.
Supporters said it was just about gathering information.
