Armed Crime Spree Suspects Arrested After Approaching Cars On I-70

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - A wild crime spree that included three carjackings ended in Jefferson County Wednesday afternoon after an armed man and a female accomplice were arrested on Interstate 70.

The sheriff's department said a deputy fired a weapon, and it was unclear Wednesday night if the suspects had.

Copter4 was flying over the scene of a man on foot toting a rifle.

Officers were responding to a carjacking when the suspects got out of the stolen truck and fled with weapons south of Lookout Mountain.

At one point, the two suspects separated. The man looked for a way to escape pursuing officers and at one point tried to drive away in a Colorado Department of Transportation plow. The man couldn't find the keys and then walked into a nearby home.

A few moments after the man entered the home Copter4 caught video of an SUV breaking through a garage door and then the suspect started driving through a field toward I-70 and got stuck in a ditch.

Meanwhile, the female was taken into custody.

The suspect then jumped out of the SUV and ran to the interstate armed with what appeared to be an assault rifle. He then tried to get drivers on I-70 to pull over while pointing the rifle at vehicles, but none of them stopped.

A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy on a motorcycle was on scene and drew his weapon. He persuaded the suspect to lay down his rifle and then chased the suspect, bringing him to the ground in the middle of the interstate. A citizen who was stopped on I-70 got out of his car and helped the deputy detain the suspect.

Traffic came to a halt for about 45 minutes.

The suspects' names haven't been released.

The chase began when a sheriff's deputy pulled over the suspects' white Crown Victoria.
