Alcohol Suspected In 3 Separate Crashes That Killed 5 People In A Day
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Five people are dead after three separate car crashes in the metro area, and police say alcohol may have been a factor in all five deaths.
All the crashes happened within a 24-hour period.
Saturday morning two people died when their car sped off Interstate 225 and landed on its roof on Quebec Street.
Balloons, flowers and a heartbreaking message written by a child is all that's left at the intersection of East Iliff Avenue and Blackhawk Street in Aurora where a man was killed by a drunk driver Friday night.
"I love you papa," the message says.
Police say a truck ran a red light and slammed into another car turning left onto Iliff. The driver of that car didn't survive, but his wife and kids say, You'll live forever in our heart" in a message left at the site.
Hours earlier Aurora police were investigating another alcohol-related crash. Two people were killed in an accident just after noon near Chambers Road and 25th Place. Witnesses told police the car was weaving in and out of traffic, exceeding the speed limit, before losing control and going airborne into a tree.
Two other passengers were hurt -- one is in critical condition. Nobody was wearing seat belts.
Aurora police blame the deadly crashes on "poor decision making." In a Facebook post, the department shared a photo, writing, "Don't risk injuring or killing someone else or yourself ... don't drink and drive."
Names of all involved in the crashes have not yet been released, including the driver responsible for the collision on Iliff and what charges might be brought up.
