ACLU Files Lawsuit Against Boulder Over Ordinances Targeting Unhoused People
BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - The ACLU filed a lawsuit against the City of Boulder over two ordinances targeting unhoused people. The ACLU accused Boulder of effectively making it a crime for unhoused people to be outdoors when they have no other place to go.
The two challenged ordinances prohibit sheltering or storing property outside under a tent and forbid sleeping outside using cover or protection other than clothes.
The ACLU also accuses the city of enforcing the ordinances when weather can be dangerous for people's survival.
"The way the city is enforcing the laws right now is a blatant violation of people's constitutional rights, but not only that, it's actively endangering them," said Annie Kurtz an attorney at ACLU Colorado.
The city of Boulder has not responded to CBS4's request for comment.
