3 children rescued from home in Loveland where 2 were killed

Three children were rescued from a home in Loveland where two people were shot and killed on Thursday. Investigators are expected to release the names of those victims, ages 16 and 41, next week.

Javier Acevedo Larimer County

On Thursday afternoon, police in Loveland searched for the murder suspect in a crime scene that stretched all the way to Erie. Officers first responded to the area Pavo Court and Aries Drive in Loveland at around 2 p.m. Thursday.

They say they received 911 calls from minors inside of a home who said there was someone with a weapon inside the home and shot an unspecified number of people.

The first call at 2:21 p.m. was from a 12-year-old at the residence indicating their mother had been shot. Just two minutes later, at 2:23 p.m., 911 received a call from a 14-year-old indicating there had been a shooting.

When officers arrived at 2:29 p.m., they found the 16-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds. The arriving officers started life-saving procedures immediately. Just one minute later officers saw a 2-year-old in the backyard and they jumped the fence to get the child to safety with a waiting officer who took the child to a safe location.

At 2:32 p.m. officers located a 5-year-old inside the home, standing at the top of the stairway. That child was also safely removed from the residence. The 12-year-old caller was hiding in a lower level basement closet and told authorities that the suspect may still be in the home. That child was rescued and removed from the home.

During this time, the officers found the 41-year-old female victim deceased. They did not locate the suspect.

Authorities say the suspect was armed with a long gun and information stated the suspect was driving a 2019 Volkswagon Jetta. He was later found in Erie after following his cell phone signal. Police say the suspect shot and killed himself in the area of Coal Creek Trail west of Grandview when police arrived, at 5:13 p.m.

Preliminary information identifies that suspect as Javier Acevedo, 49, but police say a positive identification will come from the Weld County Coroner's Office.

Animal control removed two cats from inside the home in Loveland along with 5 dogs.

Neighbors described a chaotic scene on Thursday as officers searched for Acevedo, who had multiple restraining orders against him. He also had charges of sexual assault on a child.

His ex-wife told CBS4 that when the details of the investigation are released, that it should focus on mental health and that people should take reports of domestic violence seriously.
