ATM Skimmers Found At Park Meadows Mall

LONE TREE, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Lone Tree are warning the public about ATM skimmers found at Park Meadows Mall.

Police said they found two skimmers on two ATMs in the mall, and one of them had a camera attached.

Skimmers on ATMs are easy to install, especially because ATMs are out in the open and it's not uncommon to see people being protective of their information if someone is standing behind them.

Lone Tree police have a person of interest in the skimmers found at the mall. They are asking for the public's help identifying the suspect who was seen leaving an area where a credit card skimmer was found inside the mall.

One skimmer was found near the bathrooms of the food court and another inside the mall close to The Vistas.

"Those skimmers can be added pretty quickly, and if you're not paying attention they could be added without you knowing," Kristen Knoll with the City of Lone Tree said.

People who have used ATMs in the mall are being asked to check their bank statements for strange activity.

Skimmers are a new type of crime on the rise. A few months ago investigators in Arapahoe County discovered three skimmers and battery packs at the Dry Creek light rail station. Earlier this month others were found in Littleton at the Mineral and County Line light rail stations.

Skimmers can be hard to spot. Some are inserted into the ATM's slide panel. A good tip is to look for a loose front panel.

"A loose front panel … so if it appears to not be attached to the actual ATM structure, then that might be reason to believe that a skimmer has been added," Knoll said.

Lone Tree police say they don't have any known victims at this point, but if somebody believes they are a victim to contact them.
