'Young, Black, and Lit' donating thousands of books part of year-long campaign

Young, Black & Lit celebrates 5 years by giving out thousands of books

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Some young suburban students now have new books to enjoy.

Students at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School in Evanston got the new books from the group Young, Black & Lit, which donated 3,000 books to the school.

The organization is celebrating its fifth anniversary.

Young, Black & Lit gives out books that center on Black children.

"It provides a windows and mirrors opportunity – windows for children to see into other students' lives, and find those similarities and differences; and then mirrors to reaffirm the students of color that I have in my class, and allow them to see themselves in the books that they are reading, " said 4th grade teacher Krystin Madison.

Since 2018, Young, Black & Lit has given out more than 58,000 across the country, and this year plans to distribute 25,000 more. The books are for kids in kindergarten through 8th grade.

The non-profit also plans to print its own book, and is now looking for an author to publish.
