2 Killed, 3 Injured In Wrong-Way Crash On Veterans Memorial Tollway
(CBS) -- A driver headed the wrong way on the Veterans Memorial Tollway set off a deadly chain reaction crash late Thursday night.
Illinois State Police said a Volkswagen Jetta was headed south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 355 near Maple Avenue in Downers Grove shortly before 11 p.m., when it slammed into a Honda Accord, setting off a crash involving a Ford box truck and a silver Subaru.
The driver of the Volkswsagen, 36-year-old Robert Velazco, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the Honda, 32-year-old Dr. Arshad Mohammed, died at the hospital.
Mohammed was a first-year orthodontic resident at the University of Illinois at Chicago, originally from Hyderabad, India.
The driver and two passengers in the Subaru suffered life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver was not hurt.
