World Trade Center Beam Hauled To Chicago Area For Memorial
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A cluster of motorcycles has escorted a concrete-encrusted World Trade Center beam into the Chicago area, for storage until a heroes museum is built north of the city.
Joe Alger, president of JA Frate Logistics, said he was operating on a deadline to get the 13,000-pound steel beam out of a hangar at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
"We had a beam that Kirk Morris – who's a Gold Star father, his son Geoffrey Morris was killed in action in Iraq in 2004, and Kirk started a Heroes of Freedom Foundation – he was going to put this beam into a memorial honoring those who gave their lives."
Geoffrey Morris and several of his friends joined the military in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Alger said one of his semi-trailer trucks – escorted by a group of motorcycles – was hauling the beam to a storage facility in Zion, until a Heroes of Freedom Memorial is built in either Wauconda or Waukegan.
