Woman Slain Outside Elementary School On West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was shot and killed early Monday outside an elementary school in the Austin neighborhood.

Police responded to the 5000 block of West Maypole Avenue just before 2 a.m., and found a 25-year-old woman lying on the sidewalk, with a gunshot wound to the head. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting happened on the sidewalk just outside Spencer Elementary Technology Academy.

The school was open as normal on Monday, but the shooting weighed on parents as they dropped off their children.

"When I walk them to school, I tell them to pay attention to me and watch their surroundings, because it's very dangerous out here," Charles Williams said.

Neighbors lingered, too, waiting on more information about the shooting.

"I've been over here since 1990. I ain't never heard of nobody getting killed right in front of the school. So, you know, it's kind of shocking to me," Willie Aldridge said.

School staff who arrived before daylight worried about more than their safety.

"The kids will hear about it. I don't think it will have much [effect] on them. Like I said, they're numb to it as of now. It's been going on too long. They hear about it on a daily basis. It's like we're used to it, and we accept it, instead of trying to do something about it," said custodian Dana Balark. "That's very unfortunate."

Chicago saw nearly 50 shootings in a 48-hour period over the weekend.

No one was in custody Monday morning for the shooting outside Spencer Elementary. Area Central detectives were investigating.
