Woman hurt after crash leads to shooting in Avondale

CHICAGO (CBS) — A woman was injured after a crash led to a shooting in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood early Friday morning.

Police said around 1:50 a.m., a Dodge Caravan was driving northbound near the 3000 block of California Avenue when it collided with a stolen gray Honda and a black Tesla.

After the crash, three men in the Dodge fired several shots at the people inside the stolen Honda before leaving the scene.

Gregory Rogers, an Uber driver who was inside the Tesla, described the incident.

"It was right next to me. So I was just hoping they didn't shoot into my car. I actually just climbed onto the back seat and came to this corner right here," he said.

Police said the shots fired hit a 19-year-old woman who was walking on the sidewalk.

"When I came to this corner, she was trying to go this way, and she was hurt, so she couldn't make it. She ended up right here. I tried to give her help and put a tourniquet on her, but she refused my help. And I guess the ambulance came and got her and took her to the hospital," Rogers said.

She was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in good condition with gunshot wounds to her right shoulder and torso.

As of Friday, no other injuries were reported. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Area 5 detectives were investigating.
