(STMW) -- A woman was found shot to death Saturday morning in Gary.

The woman has not been identified and is listed as a Jane Doe, a news release from the Lake County coroner states.

She died from a gunshot wound to the head, the release also states.

Gary police Lt. Thomas Pawlak was the first to arrive at the scene in the 3800 block of Massachusetts Street about 7:45 a.m., in response to a call of a woman down.

The woman was lying in a pool of blood and investigators noticed a trail of blood from a nearby wooded area.

The woman is Gary's 23rd homicide of the year and the second in the two weeks since Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson announced a comprehensive program to combat crime in the city.
