Woman Charged With Lying About Attack, Abduction
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 39-year-old woman has been charged with filing a false police report, after allegedly lying about being attacked and kidnapped outside a CTA train station on the West Side.
Veronica Fuentes allegedly told police a man hit her on the back of the head after she exited the Pink Line station at 21st and Pulaski on Saturday, and then dragged her into a nearby abandoned building. She claimed four men held her captive for three days before she was able to escape.
Police said she later admitted she fabricated the story. Fuentes has been charged with one felony count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.
Fuentes allegedly told police, after she was abducted, she was forced to drink an unknown liquid from a glass vodka bottle. She had said she realized she had been left alone on Tuesday, after hearing the four men argue over who would watch her.
Before recanting her story, she had told detectives she ran out of the building Tuesday night, got on a bus, went to Mount Sinai Hospital, and contacted police. She also claimed her abductors tracked her down after stealing her smart phone earlier in the week.
None of her claims proved to be true, and she was arrested for filing a false police report.
Her claims prompted a warning to thousands of CTA riders, and spurred the Guardian Angels to canvass the area and hand out flyers about the purported attack.
Fuentes was due to appear for a bond hearing Friday afternoon.
