Woman Arrested After Police Chase Of Stolen Ambulance

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly stealing an ambulance in Chicago and leading Illinois State Police on a chase on the Tri-State Tollway.

The MedEx ambulance was stolen from the ambulance bay of the University of Illinois Hospital at 1740 W. Taylor St. about 6:45 a.m., according to a UIC spokesperson.

Illinois State Police said they were notified of the stolen ambulance around 7:35 a.m., and after a brief chase on the Tri-State, it was pulled over around 7:45 a.m. near Cicero.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested, and charges were pending.

According to a statement from MedEx, the woman who stole the ambulance recently had been released from U of I Hospital, but was never transported by the ambulance. The company said tracking technology on the ambulance allowed police to find it, and the hospital was able to help identify the woman using surveillance video from the emergency department.

MedEx said the ambulance was inspected after it was recovered, and it was not damaged, and is back in service.
