Wojnarowski: Derrick Rose Hasn't Been Ruled Out For Season Yet
(CBS) Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose can't catch a break. For the third time in three years, he's set to undergo knee surgery. The next procedure will repair a torn medial meniscus.
Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski joined the Mully and Hanley show on Wednesday morning to share what he's learned about the injury and what the Bulls' options and prospects are moving forward.
"The question is, is how they'll treat the knee injury," Wojnarowski said. "Whether it's a full repair, which will obviously cost him the season and another long rehab. Or if they just (do) what's called 'snipping' the meniscus, which is a shorter recovery. We saw Russell Westbrook do that, and that could be a month, six weeks, two months. But that would maybe allow him to return this season. That's what I was told last night, was that's what they're looking at. No one has ruled him out for the season yet."
There's still hope that the injury won't be season-ending, but it's "yet to be determined," Wojnarowski said.
With the trade deadline passed, it's "slim pickings" out there in terms of a replacement, Wojnarowski said. Slim pickings include players like Nate Robinson, Will Bynum and Sebastian Telfair.
"Even if he returned this year," Wojnarowski said, "if they handled the tear in a similar way Westbrook did, I don't know if anyone is naive enough to think that he's just going to show back up and be that player (he once was). That's probably not going to happen. That's the sad part of this is, so much of Derrick's game was built on explosion, his athleticism and he's not the same in that regard. But, on a team as talented as this Chicago team, having him on the floor, having a very good Derrick Rose still gave them hope that they could win the East, that they could win a championship. Certainly all of that is in doubt now."
