With Extreme Cold Comes Extreme Danger

(CBS) – Imagine your child standing, waiting at a bus stop on a day where the predicted high temperature is eleven below.

That's dangerous cold, and you need to take precautions to stay safe.

CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports on the dangers of prolonged subzero temperatures.

Wind gusts whipping up to 31 miles an hour; just the start of a dangerous deep freeze.

But Jim Turcan had to work in the cold Friday night to keep his trucks running.

He runs Cornerstone Partners, a snow and ice removal service in the western suburbs of Chicago. He says thriving in the bitter cold boils down to wearing the right winter gear.

"We're running around on the ice and compacted snow. We're trying to make sure that no one else falls. We can't go down in the process."

Emergency rooms are preparing for a blizzard of patients with all kinds of cold weather-related injuries. One physician at Loyola University Medical Center said the hospital had already treated several children for broken bones.

He predicted another big issue will be people who don't leave snow shoveling to the experts -- and end up with heart trouble.
