Winnetka Home Destroyed By Fire

WINNETKA (CBS) -- The bitter cold made for a challenging night for firefighters in north suburban Winnetka, as they spent hours battling a large house fire.

CBS 2's Courtney Gousman reports sheets of ice covered the ground surrounding a house that went up in flames in the 900 block of Pine Tree Lane around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The ice caused lots of slips and falls for firefighters as water from the house drained into the street and driveway as crews worked to douse the heavy flames. Hoses also froze from the frigid conditions.

The house was vacant, and up for sale, and work was being done to renovate the home.

No one was in the home at the time, and none of the firefighters were hurt despite many of them falling on the ice.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Thursday morning.
