Originally, stations in Country Club Hills, Dolton, Tinley Park, and Broadview were listed in the giveaway, but Wilson later confirmed those stations are no longer on the list. Wilson urges people to not line up overnight for the giveaway.
As with previous giveaways, tickets will be handed out beginning at 7 a.m., and drivers will need a ticket to get gas at participating stations. Drivers won't be allowed to line up early.
Each station can expect up to about 400 cars, and the giveaway is expected to last about 4-5 hours.
Chicago's emergency management office also advises:
- There will be one entry and exit point at each station with volunteers along with a site leader providing direction. Instructions for lining up will be provided at each site.
- Vehicles will be allowed to line-up at 7 a.m. Each vehicle will receive a sticker indicating position in line. Note: motorists will not be allowed to line-up in advance, and all must have a sticker in order to receive the free gas.
- Each station can expect up to 400 cars per location. Estimated time is 4-5 hours. Note: this could differ per station.
- Traffic Control Aides will be on hand at each location to assist with flow and impacts from heavy traffic.
- Chicago Police will also assist at each location within the district it's located to ensure public safety and the free flow of traffic.
- No gas cans or other containers allowed.
The announcement comes after Mayor Lori Lightfoot's gas card program advanced following a 15-12 vote by the budget Committee -- which would provide 50,000 prepaid $150 gas cards, and 100,000 transit cards.
