William "Refrigerator" Perry Hospitalized

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Former Chicago Bears defensive tackle William "Refrigerator" Perry was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Sunday after appearing at Soldier Field for the Bears season finale.

Perry has been battling diabetes and Guillain-Barre Syndrome for years, but he was still able to make it to the Bears game on Sunday as a surprise New Year's gift from his family.

A Bears player for eight years, Perry is best known for scoring a touchdown in Super Bowl XX in 1986. He was 23 at the time, playing in his rookie season for an '85 Bears team that dominated from start to finish.

Now 53, Perry is in danger of losing his leg due to an infection, reports USA Today. Diabetes can make it difficult to fight off infections.

Perry checked into Northwestern Memorial before the game but was allowed to leave in order to attend the Bears' last game of the season, as long as he promised to return.

Now back in the hospital, Perry is being treated for that leg infection.
