White Sox Catcher Tyler Flowers To Have Knee Surgery

By Bruce Levine--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers will have surgery to repair cartilage damage in his right knee, he told CBSChicago.com

He'll have the operation in Atlanta on Oct. 9, he said.

Flowers, 29, has been the starting catcher for Chicago since 2013. Going into Thursday's game, Flowers was hitting .236 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs.

Flowers had season-ending shoulder surgery in September 2013 and came back to catch 127 games in 2014. He was traded to the White Sox in December 2008 in a five-player deal that featured right-hander Javier Vazquez going to the Braves.

A lifetime .220 hitter, Flowers has improved his skills behind the plate and is considered one of the better pitch framers in the game. He will enter his second year of salary arbitration in 2016.

Flowers earned $2.68 million this season.
