Boy, 13, dead after being shot in head on Chicago's West Side

Boy, 13, killed in Chicago West Side shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed Friday evening in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

Police said the teen was on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of South Independence Boulevard when someone opened fire.

The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he was first listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.

The boy later died at the hospital.

Street Pastor Donavan Price says this is a tragic start to summer in Chicago.

"It reminds us how much we need to take hold of our children, love our children, pray for our children, especially pray for this family and this terrible situation just as the summer begins," he said.

No one was in custody.

The circumstances of the shooting remained under investigation by Harrison Area detectives.
