2 Dead, 3 Wounded In Shooting At Memorial For 2009 Murder Victim

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Insanity. That's how a city leader and a victim's relatives described a shooting that left two dead and three wounded as loved ones were remembering a man who was killed seven years ago.

Relatives identified one of the victims as 38-year-old Davon Barrett, who was outside with about a dozen other people for a solemn annual tradition: a memorial for his brother, 17-year-old Martell Barrett, who was shot and killed in 2009, only blocks away from Sunday night's crime scene.

Every year since Martell's death, his family and friends have gathered on his birthday to pay tribute.

Sunday night, five people were shot on the front porch of a home in the 2000 block of West 68th Place around 11:10 p.m., all of them friends or relatives taking part in a memorial gathering for Martell.

Witnesses said the shooter was wearing all dark clothing, and fired from at least 30 yards away into the crowd.

Family members said they're not sure what prompted the shooting.

Ald. Toni Foulkes (16th) called the attack senseless.

"It's insanity to me that people would shoot in a crowd of people. You know, who does that? If you're after someone, you take that up personally with one-on-one. You don't come and shoot in a crowd of people. It could have been little kids out here, or seniors, and I know these people, and it's hard," she said.

Davon Barrett's aunt, Quincetta Graham, said she's "heartbroken" and "shattered to pieces" over the shooting.

"It's like some days I wish that summer would never come, because when summer comes, it brings violence, and that's just the reality that we have to live in. That's the reality that we have to live in. If we get 80 degrees, sunny, that means we're kind of sitting back and saying somebody's going to get shot today," Graham said.

Davon Barrett and another man died of their injuries. Relatives identified the second man who died as 26-year-old Devin Hamb, a friend who was attending the gathering for Martell. Three other people were wounded in the shooting, including a 27-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old boy.
