Chicago shooting: Woman critically wounded in West Chatham

Apparent road rage shooting leaves woman critically wounded

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 41-year-old woman was shot in the head while sitting inside her car with her husband and teenage son Tuesday morning in the West Chatham neighborhood.

The victim's husband said the shooting was the result of a road rage incident. Their 15-year-old son was in the back seat as the shooting played out in the parking lot of a busy shopping center on 87th Street, just off the Dan Ryan Expressway.

The family said they were headed to Home Depot on 87th Street to get materials for a job. Jesus Garcia was behind the wheel with his wife, Sylvia, and their 15-year-old son, when he honked his horn at the car in front of them to get the driver to move.

So as soon as he hit [Jesus] with a gun in the face, he started shooting everywhere, and unfortunately, he got the wife in the head," said Abimael Diaz, the family's pastor.

Diaz added that Jesus Garcia was "in shock."

Police said Sylvia was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

"We have to wait about the doctors, but for now, the condition is a little bit critical," Diaz said.

Her husband returned to the scene Tuesday afternoon to retrieve their car and remove a shell casing lodged in the headrest.
