Waukegan 'Spiritual Healer' Apparently Leaves Town After Scamming People Out Of Tens Of Thousands Of Dollars
(CBS) -- Waukegan Police say a woman who advertised herself as a spiritual healer has apparently skipped town - after scamming people out of tens of thousands of dollars.
Rosario was the name she gave.
She ran ads in a Spanish language newspaper promising "spiritual healing," says Waukegan Police Commander Joe Florip.
And people paid her for "ritualistic prayer." And then when they went back for more "spiritual healing," Florip says, Rosario was gone.
"We believe these people have been scammed. And we believe there's $40,000 missing between 10 victims - that we know of so far.
"We want the community to be aware of this."
Commander Florip says you might expect the victims to be elderly - like the victims in many scams. But he says Rosario's victims were young: from their early 20s into their 50s.
He says the scam may have started as early as May. He says police reports weren't filed until a few days ago.
