Waukegan City Council Approves Settlement For Man Wrongfully Convicted Of Murder

(CBS) -- The Waukegan City Council has voted unanimously to approve its share of the $20 million settlement being paid to Juan Rivera, who spent nearly 20 years in prison for a notorious murder he did not commit, reports WBBM's Bob Roberts.

Waukegan will pay Rivera $2.5 million each of the next three years. His attorney Jon Loevy says his client has not yet seen any of the $20 million and says Waukegan and its insurance carrier are still litigating over who will pay its share and how much.

The negotiations did not please Mayor Wayne Motley, who has withdrawn Waukegan from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force as a result.

Three juries found Rivera guilty in the murder of Holly Staker before an appeals panel threw out the charges in 2011.
