Water Main Break Closes Streets In West Loop

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Portions of Canal and Fulton streets are closed in the West Loop as crews work to repair and investigate a water main break Friday morning.

The city's Department of Water Management was called about water leaking into the street near Canal and Fulton shortly before 7:30 a.m., department spokesman Pete Scales said.

Crews shut down a 12-inch water main under the western sidewalk along Canal to stop the leak, Scales said. Buildings in the area continue to receive water from alternative lines, and water pressure has not been affected.

As of 9:15 a.m., Canal remains closed from Lake to just south of Kinzie; and Fulton is closed from Canal to Clinton as water department crews remain on the scene to repair the break and investigate its cause, Scales said.

The leak is near the Ogilvie Transportation Center, but is having no impact on Metra service, a spokesman said.
