WATCH: Officers Quash Inmate Hostage Incident At Cook County Jail
(CBS) – The Cook County Sheriff's Office has released video and identified the two inmates who took control of a jail housing tier and injured another detainee during a standoff at Cook County Jail earlier this week.
The leaders of the takeover were 24-year-old Martin Alvarado and 27-year-old Cordarryl Stevenson, both of whom had been jailed on felony charges stemming from separate arrests, Sheriff Tom Dart said Friday.
Clip 1:
The standoff began around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, when the two inmates poured soapy water on the floor and sabotaged surveillance cameras in a housing tier in Division 10. One of 16 inmates who live in the tier was being held hostage by the "two aggressors" with a sharp object.
Around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, members of the jail's Emergency Response Team entered the tier and took custody of the two inmates. The injured detainee was transported to an area hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries.
A weapon was recovered.
Clip 2:
There were no other injuries reported, and an investigation continues. Both Alvarado and Stevenson had committed offenses behind bars, Dart said in a news release.
