Warrant Issued For Man Suspected Of Dragging Waukegan Cop From Stolen Car

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An arrest warrant has been issued for a man who allegedly dragged a Waukegan police officer from his car while fleeing in a stolen car.

Waukegan police have obtained an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Santos Martinez, who is believed to be the driver of the vehicle that hit and dragged the officer on Saturday when police spotted a stolen car and tried to get the people inside to come out.

Martinez's last known address was in the 1300 block of North Avenue in Waukegan. The warrant charges him with resisting a police officer and aggravated battery to a police officer, and sets his bail at $250,000.

A man who saw it all happen at the BP station at the corner of Grand and Jackson Saturday evening recorded the incident on his cell phone.

Kenny was working at a barber shop across the street when he saw the commotion of police surrounding a car.

"It was kind of a scary situation because I seen guns drawn," he said.

Waukegan police said officers spotted a stolen Volkswagen and were attempting to get the people inside to come out, when the driver drove off, hitting and dragging one of the officers.

"You can imagine being thrown from a car like that can take its toll. He is expected to make a full recovery," Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said of the officer.

Police chased the driver until they deemed the pursuit reckless to continue. The stolen car was found Monday night about a mile away.

Anyone with information on Martinez's whereabouts should call Waukegan police at 847-360-9001.
