Wannabe Cubs Mascot Gives His Side Of Bar Brawl

(CBS) -- A controversial character who hangs around Wrigley Field wants to set the record straight.

He was caught on video this weekend throwing a punch in a Wrigleyville bar. As CBS 2's Mike Parker reports, the man in the costume says there's more to the story than the video shows.

For eight years now, Billy Cub has shown up outside Cubs home games, to pose for pictures with delighted fans and to collect more than a few tips.

After Saturday's game, Patrick Weier was wearing the costume inside John Barleycorn's bar a block from the park posing for pictures.

"A guy came out of nowhere and blind-sided me from behind and tried tackling me. I turned and pushed him off me," he says. "Then he came up and removed the head, wouldn't give it back and I threw a punch at him."

He adds: "As soon as I punched him, the bouncers all came in, and they broke it up and threw him out the door."

With over a quarter of a million hits on YouTube, the incident is shining a new spotlight on Billy Cub. The Chicago Cubs organization, now with a new "official" mascot, Clark the Cub, is mulling over legal action to keep Billy Cub away from Wrigley Field.

John Weier created the creature.

"I'll continue to doing this as long as fans continue to support us," he says.

The Cubs organization had only this to say about that unofficial greeter outside Wrigley: "Billy Cub is not and never was affiliated with the Cubs."

As for that scuffle in the bar, Chicago police say there were no reports or complaints filed.
