Volunteers Assemble Daley Plaza Nativity Scene

CHICAGO (CBS) -- For three decades, a couple dozen volunteers have gathered on this day on Daley Plaza for what some feel is an obligation.

WBBM's Mike Krauser reports volunteer carpenters and electricians, members of the "God Squad," set up the nativity scene on Daley Plaza Saturday morning.

Ed O'Malley, a member of the Nativity Scene Committee, says this is about keeping the Christ in Christmas.

"I think that we have gotten away from it in a number of ways, in the schools I think we have certainly gotten away from it and in other areas just in our society, secular media, I mean there is just a lot of things that continually push Christ out," O'Malley said. "We feel it is almost our obligation to continue to teach our children what the real meaning of Christmas is."

It was once controversial and years ago the Thomas More Society, which is behind the nativity scene, fought the city in court to have it in Daley Plaza.
