View: Renderings Of Cubs' Proposed Signage Expansion At Wrigley
(CBS) The Cubs are showing off sketches of their new plan for Wrigley Field - with more signs and almost surely less of a view for rooftop owners.
It is what the Cubs wanted all along.
So why didn't they ask for all those signs - seven - in the first place?
"I think we were hopeful. We have a very patient owner. If we can find a way to do things without the acrimony and the litigation - which there is risk, right, that a court interprets things and slows things down to take a look at some of the legal issues. So we were hoping to avoid all that."
Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney says at some point you just have to make a decision - and the Cubs did just that.
They were hopeful the rooftop owners would agree not to sue the Cubs if they put up just a couple of signs. That more minimal plan was approved last year.
But rooftop owners would not sign off on anything like that.
So it's full speed ahead for what the Cubs apparently wanted all along.
"This is just a math problem for us. There's no acrimony between us and the rooftops. It's simply a math problem. We need to generate the most resources we can to support our club."
A spokesman for the rooftop owners says they have no comment at this point.
Mayor Emanuel's communications director says in a statement: "The Planning Department has been working with the Cubs on their sign plan, but there are additional components of this plan – including moving the bullpens – that are totally new, that weren't previously disclosed, and that will need to be reviewed."
And the mayor's office says it's unlikely the Cubs' plan will go before the Landmarks Commission next week as the Cubs had been counting on.
