View: Breakdown Of America's All-Star Final Voting
(CBS) On Thursday, it was announced that Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and White Sox left-hander Chris Sale had earned All-Star Game berths through the final voting process.
Each was plenty deserving and had the best numbers of any of their competitors, with Rizzo hitting .277 with 20 homers and 49 RBIs and Sale going 8-1 with a 2.08 ERA this year.
And for both, a furious Twitter campaign helped them become victors, as #VoteRizzo and #TargetSale permeated users' feeds all day long. It wasn't surprising that Chicago lended its support in voting via Twitter, texting and online, but what's interesting is how the rest of the country voted.
Thanks to some terrific graphics from MLB.com, now we know where else across the country Rizzo and Sale drew their support from.
Rizzo carried Illinois, most of Michigan, most of Iowa, a good share of Missouri and was the favored candidate in various parts of several states on the West Coast. He defeated Atlanta's Justin Upton, Colorado's Justin Morneau, Florida's Casey McGehee and Washington's Anthony Rendon.
Sale carried Illinois, most of Wisconsin, most of Iowa, most of Minnesota, much of Missouri and also had a tremendous amount of support on the East Coast and from Florida, which is his home state. He defeated Cleveland's Corey Kluber, Detroit's Rick Porcello, Houston's Dallas Keuchel and the Los Angeles Angels' Garrett Richards.
