Waukegan Police Officer Dragged By Stolen Vehicle
(CBS) -- Caught on video: A Waukegan police officer injured as he clings to the door of a stolen vehicle that speeds away.
CBS 2's Mai Martinez talked to the witness who recorded the incident.
It happened Saturday evening at a BP station. The witness was working across the street at his barber shop when he saw the commotion of police surrounding a car.
"It was kind of a scary situation because I seen guns drawn," says the witness, whose name is Kenny.
Waukegan police say officers spotted a stolen vehicle and were attempting to get the people inside to come out.
As the suspect drove off, a Waukegan police officer was dragged by the vehicle.
"You can imagine being thrown from a car like that can take its toll. He is expected to make a full recovery," Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip says of the officer.
Police chased the driver until they deemed the pursuit reckless to continue.
"This was a dangerous situation. It could've ended very badly for not only officers -- civilians, suspects. A car can be a weapon," Florip says.
The vehicle was last seen in the area of Sheridan and Belvidere Road.
Police say the stolen vehicle is a gray, 4-door 2005 Volkswagen with an Illinois license plate of Z842693.
It was stolen Nov. 29 from the 700 block of Belvidere Road.
