Veterans Group Raising Money For Wreaths Honoring War Dead
(CBS) -- A local veterans group leader says he's confident the group will be able to raise $720 more to cover the costs of wreaths honoring each of his community's war dead on Memorial Day.
This will be the fourth year that wreaths will be displayed in Memorial Park in Arlington Heights honoring the memorials of each of the 58 men from that community who has died in war.
Greg Padovani of the Veterans Memorial Committee says, "Two of our fallen heroes are from the Civil War. One, Jacob Sigwalt died at the Battle of Stone Harbor. The other one, Warren Kennicott was actually in the Battle of Gettysburg."
Padovani says that, during Arlington Heights Memorial Day ceremony, the names are read of each of the 58 Fallen Heroes.
"That is probably one of the most profoundly moving parts of that ceremony. The crowd--you could hear a pin drop--they're so quiet and respectful during the reading of those names," Padovani says.
He says so far his group has received sponsorship money for 40 of the 58 wreaths.
It costs $40 to sponsor a wreath.
More information on wreath sponsorship is on the Arlington Heights Memorial Park website at www.ahpd.org.
