Utility truck hits pedestrian in west Chicago suburbs, shuts down busy North Avenue

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (CBS) -- A utility truck slammed into a pedestrian in the western suburbs late Tuesday afternoon.

Winfield police were called at 4:14 p.m. to North Avenue, just east of St. Charles Road, in an unincorporated area of DuPage County just west of Carol Stream, east of West Chicago, and north of Winfield.

A 34-year-old man had been hit by a utility truck headed east on North Avenue. The truck had a trailer full of cable spools attached.

The man was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield in critical condition, police said.

Eastbound North Avenue was closed between St. Charles and Morton roads while investigators were on the scene, but has since reported.

The DuPage MERIT crash reconstruction team and Illinois State Police assisted in investigating the crash, Winfield police said.
