Man Shot While Walking Dog In Uptown

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot while walking his dog late Saturday night in the Uptown neighborhood.

Police said the 34-year-old man was walking his dog around 11:30 p.m. on Broadway just north of Irving Park Road, when he heard shots and felt a bullet hit him in the right hip.

As CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reported, the victim may be all too familiar with hospitals. The Chicago Tribune reported he is a Northwestern University emergency room resident.

A man who lives and works nearby was shocked – noting that random violence is far from typical in the area.

"I walk to and from work every day, so normally, this is a neighborhood that doesn't have any trouble," said Kenneth Mikelson, who works and lives nearby. "To think that someone was shot walking their dog here – and I was here – that's nuts."

The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition.

Detectives were questioning a person of interest on Sunday.

Area North detectives were investigating.
