Shots fired outside Mariano's in Ukrainian Village

Shots fired outside Mariano's in Ukrainian Village, outside which man was recently shot and killed

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Shots were fired over the weekend in the parking lot of the Mariano's store in Ukrainian Village – the very same grocery store where a man was shot and killed just weeks prior.

As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported Monday, the store lies within the West Town community area – a part of the city where we have been tracking other violent crimes for weeks.

Just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, a man was loading items into his car outside the Mariano's at 2021 W. Chicago Ave., right off Damen Avenue, when someone drove up and started shooting.

Fortunately, the victim was not hurt and only his vehicle was damaged.  Despite a number of shots in a high traffic area, no one else was hurt either.

Second shooting in two weeks outside Ukrainian Village Mariano's

It was a different story at the same store just two weeks ago. On Monday, Dec. 19, there another shooting scene above the grocery store on the garage level.

In that incident, 37-year-old Darian Neal was sitting in his car around 4:30 p.m. when a car pulled up, and two men got out and started shooting at him.

Neal's his car covered in bullet holes, and he was pronounced dead soon afterward at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

Police aren't saying if they believe the two incidents are connected, nor are they addressing the other recent violence we've tracked in this area.

Several violent robberies and carjackings were reported in the West Town area December - a number of them, less than a mile from the Mariano's. At one point, we tracked three or more robberies or carjackings in a day.

Chicago Police are still investigating the shooting and the homicide.

"If detectives establish a pattern of crimes that are connected, they will create a Community Alert, which our office will disseminate at that time," police News Affairs wrote.

In a statement Tuesday morning, Mariano's said, "We are working with law enforcement on this investigation and have no further details at this time."

We are still waiting to hear from aldermen and community organizations about the recent violence in the area.
