Police: Two Would-Be Robbers Fatally Shot In Auburn Gresham
(CBS) -- An attempted liquor store robbery turned deadly when an employee in the store stopped the robbers in their tracks Saturday night.
CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports that this isn't the first time the store has been targeted.
Police say two robbers announced the crime inside the Z&S Food and Liquor store near 87th and Loomis in the Auburn Gresham and not long after they were shot and eventually killed.
Police believe one of the suspects showed a handgun and that's when an employee took out his own gun and fatally shot the two alleged robbers.
The same location was robbed in August of 2011. At the time, police said two men robbed the store just after 10 p.m. but as they were leaving, several shots were fired and one of the suspects was killed. A liquor store employee was hit in that incident and was in critical condition.
"They were defending themselves," said customer Chris Robinson. "You try to rob the store, there's consequences behind every action. You've got to face that.
The two men killed have been identified as 15-year-old Keshawn Marzette and 17-year-old William Larson, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Gabriel Williams knew one of the teens.
"I know he was nice but the neighborhood just took hold of him," she said.
Just last week, Marzette took hold of Williams' BMW, stole the car, went for a joy ride and totaled it.
"My neighbors ended up stopping the little boy and got him up out of my car, actually held him there until police got there, and they locked him up," Williams said. "So now it just hurts that he's back out here, doing it again. like he didn't learn his lesson."
The same owners have operated Z&S Food and Liquors for more than 30 years.
Customers say, they're well-known for helping out people in the neighborhood any way they can.
