Two Suspects In Custody After Robbery Leads To Chase, Crash
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police said two suspects were in custody from at least one of a string of convenience store robberies early Friday, while two more suspects remained on the loose.
An SUV crashed in the 4200 block of West Cortland Street following a police chase after a robbery at the 7-Eleven at Grand Avenue and Halsted Street. Police took one man and one woman into custody after the crash.
The first robbery occurred around 2:20 a.m. at the Shell gas station in the 1100 block of West Diversey Parkway. In that heist, armed suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
About 10 minutes later, there was another robbery attempt less than half a mile away, at a 7-Eleven in the 2600 block of North Lincoln Avenue, when armed suspects entered the store, and announced a robbery, but left without stealing anything.
The last robbery occurred at the 7-Eleven at Grand and Halsted, around 3 a.m. Three armed offenders entered the store, and pistol-whipped at least one clerk. Another clerk was cut with a box cutter. Police said the suspects got away with cigarettes, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police arrived while the suspects were still at the store, and the suspects fled in an SUV. Police chased the suspects to the 4200 block of West Cortland Street, where they crashed their SUV. Two suspects were arrested, and police believe two others got away.
It was not immediately clear if the same suspects were responsible for all three robberies.
