Teen Out With Friends After Prom Among Two Killed In Calumet City Car Crash
CALUMEY CITY, Ill. (CBS) -- A prom night turned into a deadly car crash in south suburban Calumet City early Saturday morning.
CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports two people were killed and a total of four people were involved in the crash in the crash on State Street near Alice Avenue around 6:40 a.m. Saturday.
Police say 18-year-old Aaron Dunigan was with two other teens in the car after prom. Investigators say the vehicle they were in crossed the center line, hitting another driver head on.
The driver of the other car, 56-year-old Juan Jose Rivera, was killed by the impact.
Dunigan played quarterback for Thornton Fractional North's football team. He and his date went to their high school prom at the Hyatt Regency Friday night. They made it back home, but Dunigan later went out again, with friends
"Kindest spirit ever and nobody that knows him didn't love him," said Kaye Jackson, his mother.
Rivera was a father of four and his nephew Raul Martinez said he was a 'hardworking guy.'
"This is just devastating to our family," Martinez said.
Rivera was heading to his job at Metra. He loved his job and working on vintage cars like his prized Mustang.
"He would give his shirt off the back to anybody," said Tiara Page, Rivera's neighbor. "He was like a father figure to my son. It's just hard."
The teenager who was driving the car with Dunigan inside was charged with possession of marijuana, police said.
His name has not been released at this time. Police are in the process of determining if that driver had the drug in his system at the time of the crash.
